April Snow

Actor Bae Yong-jun’s agency BOF said on June 20 that Bae, who was hospitalized on June 19 due to overexertion, is now recovering. “He was hospitalized after showing symptoms of exhaustion when he returned home after filming the final scene of the movie ‘April Snow’ late into the night. But there is nothing to worry about. He is getting injections now and recovering,” said a person from BOF. He also added that he will notify the actor’s fans about his release from the hospital, which will be decided after a precise diagnosis has been made.

Bae’s Japanese agency IMX also posted a message on its website about the actor’s illness, writing that Bae had been hospitalized due to overwork and fatigue that had accumulated during the movie’s filming but that he had no serious health problems, and urged the actor’s fans not to worry. IMX also added that Bae was feeling grateful to his fans for helping finish the production of “April Snow” without any mishaps.

Major Japanese news agencies including Yomiuri Shinbun, Sports Nippon and Kyodo News also reported on Bae’s hospitalization on June 21.

Sports Nippon wrote that the production of “April Snow” turned out to be a “hard battle” for Bae, as it lasted a month longer than expected due to the script being changed daily according to circumstances on the filming set. As a result, the actor lost four kilograms of weight over one month due to stress.

After five months of filming, Korean film “April Snow” was finally completed on 18 June. “April Snow”, starring Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin and directed by Hur Jin-ho, is one of the most anticipated Korean film for the year 2005 and the first Korean film to aim for a simultaneous pan-Asian release in 10 Asian nations.

Both Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin had different feelings upon completion of filming for “April Snow”. Bae didn’t feel any relief at the film’s completion as he bears great expectations for this film compared to any of his previous projects. Son felt glad that the film was completed but she also felt a bit sad.

The last day of filming took place on Joongbu Highway for the scene where In-su (Bae) drives on the highway heading to Samcheok Hospital. The scene used artificial snow and crew members were kept busy the entire night spraying the snow. However, due to the artificial snow sticking strongly onto the windshield of the car, the shooting of the scene only ended at 4 a.m.

Two days prior to the completion of the movie, Bae had personally prepared gifts and autographed photos for over 80 of the crewmembers to thank them for their hard work and their sincere devotion towards “April Snow”. He said that he felt as if the crewmembers were like his own family.

Bae and Son are presently taking a short break after shooting “April Snow”. However, it will not be a long break due to the hectic schedule coming up ahead for the preparation of the theatrical release of “April Snow”.

“April Snow” tells a story of a man and a woman who experienced their spouses’ accident and betrayal at the same time and lose balance of their lives. They wander in despair with anger and confusion, but start another unexpected romance which causes them pain and much hesitation when faced with love.

The most anticipated Korean film of 2005, April Snow, will be showing in Malaysia September 2005.
